Chittorgarh Fort is open to visitors every day of the year, including public holidays. The fort gates open at 9:30 AM and close at 5:00 PM. The Sound & Light Show in the evening begins separately at approximately 7:30 PM and lasts about 45 minutes. The fort is divided into multiple sections, and some internal monuments like the Government Museum inside Fateh Prakash Palace have their own timings (10:00 AM to 4:30 PM, closed on Fridays).
Entry to the main fort complex itself is free. However, individual monuments within the fort have their own ticket charges. Vijay Stambha (Tower of Victory): ā¹15 for Indian citizens, ā¹200 for foreign nationals. Fateh Prakash Palace Museum: ā¹10 for Indian citizens, ā¹100 for foreign nationals. Camera/Video charges: ā¹25 for still cameras, ā¹100 for video cameras. Professional film shoots require separate permits from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
The Sound & Light Show held at Chittorgarh Fort is one of the most spectacular in Rajasthan. The show is organized by the Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation (RTDC) and tickets are priced at approximately ā¹100 per person for the Hindi session and ā¹150 per person for the English session. Show timings vary slightly by season ā generally 7:00 PM in winter (November to February) and 8:00 PM in summer. The show lasts approximately 45 minutes.
The best time to visit is between October and March, when the weather is cool and pleasant (15°Cā25°C). Avoid visiting during peak summer (April to June) when temperatures can exceed 42°C, making the large open areas of the fort extremely uncomfortable to walk. The monsoon season (July to September) brings lush greenery to the fort grounds, making it visually stunning but potentially slippery on the stone paths.
The fort is located 6 km from Chittorgarh Railway Station and about 2 km from Chittorgarh city centre. Auto-rickshaws charge approximately ā¹100ā150 for the full trip. E-rickshaws are available at ā¹20ā40 per person. Private taxis and cabs can be hired from the city for approximately ā¹300ā500 for a half-day tour of the entire fort. Parking is available at the base of the fort (near Ram Pol gate) for private vehicles.
The fort sprawls over 700 acres, so wear comfortable walking shoes ā you will easily cover 5ā8 km on a full day visit. Carry water, as there are very few shops inside the fort. A government-certified guide is highly recommended (approx ā¹300ā500) to bring the history alive; look for licensed guides at the Ram Pol entrance. The best photography light is in the early morning (9:30ā11:00 AM) when the sun is low and the golden stone glows.
